WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.3 concerns status messages that are visually presented and should be programmatically determinable without receiving focus. It does not require inventing extra status messages for every UI update. Too many live updates create a chatty, unusable experience.
Write the expected utterance without icon names, timestamps that add no value, “close,” or repeated application chrome. If the visible toast includes a Retry button, the status can announce the failure, but the user still needs a discoverable way to reach the action. These tests do not claim that NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, or TalkBack spoke the message. They prove prerequisites: correct role, message, channel, and focus behavior. State that scope honestly in test names and reports.
An ARIA snapshot can capture the relevant accessibility structure, but a narrow role and text assertion is less noisy for a changing toast. Automated axe checks can find some structural violations, yet they cannot determine whether rapid announcements are duplicated or appropriately prioritized. This custom event is a product-owned diagnostic seam, not a browser announcement event. Dispatch it at the same point the centralized announcer accepts a new logical notification. Test production code should not expose message bodies to analytics by default, especially when toasts can contain personal data.

Unit-test the queue as a pure state machine with event IDs, priority, and timestamps supplied by a fake clock. Browser-test the integration from a representative burst. Screen-reader-test whether priority and interruption feel usable. Each layer answers a different question.
aria-live="assertive" does not guarantee a precise interruption order across all assistive technology. It expresses priority. Do not build safety behavior that relies on one exact spoken queue sequence. Critical information should remain visible and discoverable after the transient announcement.
