A resting-state image should not accidentally become an animation test. Turning off motion cannot prove that a drawer travels in the correct direction or that focus moves at the right moment. The stylesheet does not use display: none or visibility: hidden; those properties would change layout or erase content. Zero-duration motion preserves final computed styles in many components, but component behavior still needs verification. Some implementations listen for transition completion before changing state. Do not assume the preference freezes every animation. The application must provide appropriate prefers-reduced-motion styles or logic. A failing screenshot may reveal that a decorative effect ignores the setting, which is a product issue rather than test flake.

The timestamp is illustrative and clamped for a short fixture. Use a repository-owned media fixture whose encoding is consistent across environments. Even with a fixed time, video decoding and color output can differ across operating systems. The application must be designed to read window.__VISUAL_TEST_NOW__ only in the test environment and otherwise use its normal time source. Declare the window property in the application's TypeScript types. What people get wrong is treating maxDiffPixels or a large threshold as animation control. A tolerance can absorb small rendering noise, but it does not select a deterministic frame. Name the excluded region in the test and record why it is excluded in nearby project documentation. If the mask expands after a layout change, the review should be conspicuous. Prefer component screenshots for stable owned content when only one unrelated page region is volatile.
